The Watkins Glen High School Alumni Association board of directors would like to express their thanks for another very successful annual banquet held at the Watkins Glen Community Center on Saturday, June 28th.
This banquet is, indeed, unique. It provides a forum for alumni from every year and guests to come together to celebrate and reconnect with fellow classmates and school mates. This year every decade from the 30's through the 80's had representatives in attendance. It is also unique because we recognize and honor distinguished alumni and award three scholarships totaling $5000.00 to current graduating seniors.
Therefore, special thanks go to the class contacts who put forth an effort in locating classmates and informing them of the banquet. And we greatly appreciate those that support the banquet by simply attending. Those that choose to get together with just their fellow graduates miss out on the opportunity to pay tribute to our oldest and most revered fellow alumni. They also are denied the pride in witnessing the presentation of the scholarships to three talented and well deserving graduates who may one day come back and be recognized as a distinguished alumni.
We would also like to publicly recognize and thank Famous Brands, Glen Mountain Market, Don Romeo, Michelle Hyde, and Bleachers for contributing their time and talents. We hope to see you June 27, 2015 for the 90th annual WGHS Alumni Banquet.

The Watkins Glen High School Alumni Association was formally incorporated in 2007. Its mission: to provide scholarships to graduating students, to honor Distinguished Alumni, and to support the continuance of the annual Alumni Banquet.
The 94th Annual Watkins Glen High School Alumni Banquet was attended by approximately 350 enthusiastic alumni, invited guests, spouses, friends, past faculty, prior and current scholarship recipients, and the 2019 Distinguished Alumni honoree Steve Rondinaro. The program was in memory of Elvin West, inaugural member of the board of directors.
The board would like to thank Famous Brands and Glen Mountain Market for their continued support in selling tickets; Michelle Hyde and Diane Carl from the Parks Department; Chris Updyke, Amber Benjamin, Megan Hayes, Brianna Solomon, Julie Liu, Sammy Schimizzi, Cullen Suits, Margaret Schimizzi, Dan Sims, Nan Woodworth, Barb Deane, Jenny Yuhasz Padilla for set up, banquet assistance, and clean up; Laura Greninger-Dunn for donating her 50/50 win back to the scholarship fund; an outstanding board of directors that work so hard to make it all look easy.
The Association awarded H. Nathaniel Rose, Nancy Jackson, Julie Liu, and Annika Wickham a total of $6000.00 in scholarships. An additional $1000.00 was awarded to Danielle Leszyk from friends of Alice Joyce Haughey who donated monies to the Association in her memory.
Class contacts Jaime Beligotti, David Bartone, Ken Wilson, Phyllis Palmer, JoPat Wright and many others did an excellent job of contacting and bringing their classmates together. Our most esteemed alumni celebrating their 70th reunion, class of 1949, were Charles and Betty Calhoun, Anne Elder, Nancy Yost, and Josephine (PeeWee) Standish; plus celebrating their 74th reunion from the class of 1945 were Helen Mulderman and Evelyn and Howard Stamp. Distinguished faculty guests included John and Beverly Vona, Ed and Carol Lindsey, Don and Lori Maas, and Doug Chamberlain.
Special thanks to Superintendent Greg Kelahan and his wife Linda for attending the banquet and inviting as their guests six students from various arts programs and recognizing their accomplishments.
Steve Rondinaro from the class of 1972 was the 2019 distinguished alumni honoree in the field of broadcast journalism. His acceptance speech was humorous, inspirational, and humble as he recognized family and friends from his past and his years at the Watkins Glen school district that helped mold his professional career.
The membership of the Association is crucial to what we do. Currently, we have 208 paid members. We hope to bring that number to, at least, 250. The annual dues are $25 and are used almost exclusively for Scholarships. The Association Board consists of volunteers and we keep operational costs to a minimum. Please go to our website watkinsglenalumni.org to find a membership application form, or simply send a check for $25 to WG Alumni Assoc., 301 12th St., Watkins Glen, NY 14891. Write in the memo portion of your check that it is for membership and please note your class graduation year.
While on the website, browse through the photos and info on our yearly scholarship recipients. They have made us all proud. Then allow yourself to be amazed while browsing through the outstanding accomplishments of our 17 Distinguished Alumni.
This banquet provides the forum for everyone to get together. It’s about prior and future graduates, friends, spouses, faculty, staff, school mates and classmates. It’s a wonderful tradition that the Association has been able to maintain because of the support from all the above. Without you it wouldn’t be possible. Thank you everyone!!!
